Caulis aristolochiae manshuriensis(木通)
In Shen Nong's Classic Herbs it was recorded that: "The herb, acrid in taste and neutral in nature, acts to clear the nine orifices and promote blood circulation and joint movement."
Caulis Aristolochiae Manshuriensis is the dried xylem stalk ofAkebia trifoliata (Thunb.) Koidz. var australis Rehd., Akebia trifoliata (Thunb.) Koidz. and Akebia quinata (Thunb.) Decne. of the family Aristolochiaceae, which contains akebin that can be hydrolyzed into hederagenin, oleanolic acid, glucose and rhamnose. Both its fruit and seed are anticancer drugs.
ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS
1. The dried powder, obtained from the hot water extract of Caulis Aristolochiae Manshuriensis through distillation, when administered to JTC-26 in vitro with a dose of 500μg/ml, was found to have an inhibiting rate of over 90% while the fruit 50-70% under the same dose. 2. Experiments in vivo showed that the alcohol extract of Caulis Aristolochiae Manshuriensis had an inhibition rate of 4.4% on ascitic sarcoma-180 of rats while the hot water extract 21.5%.
EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS
For pancreatic cancer, tumor of the common bile duct, cancer of oral cavity and lymphosarcoma:
Xiao Zheng Pian (a pill composed of Semen Plantagims Asiaticae (0.027g), Mylabris (0.015g) and Talcum (0.03g) is taken by mouth twice a day, each time I to 2 pills. (New Traditional Chinese Medicine, Vol. 3,1980)
For blood in urine due to cancer of the urinary bladder:
Caulis Aristolochiae Manshuriensis 3g Radix Achyranthis Bilentatae 3g Radix Rehmanniae 3g Radix Asparagi 3g Radix Ophiopogonis 3g Fructus Schisandrae 3g Cortex Phellodendri 3g Radix Glycyrrhizae 3g

HISTORICAL COMMENTS
It was stated in Essentials of Materia Medico that: "Caulis Aristolochiae Manshuriensis is indicated for strong fire-syndrome while Rhizoma Alismatis for a minor one. Though both function to relieve water retention, they are used differently."
Written in Ocean Materia Medico was that: "The drug is primarily used to cure fistula and sore throat and is preferably to be taken in decoction.
The powder can be kept in month for resolving as pn emergent therapy."
In Ri Huo Zi Materia Medico it is commented that: "The herb relieves upsetness of mind through calming the heart, quenches thirst and alleviate fever. It cures amnesia, improves visual and auditory acuity, treats nasal obstruction, clears intestine and purges away water. The herb dissolves agglomerated blood clot, evacuates pus, relieves pain, and cures furuncle and breast cancer."
