Flos et folium hibisci mutabilis(术芙蓉)
It was written in Illustrated Materia Medico that: "The Herb is acrid, neutral and is applied topically for pyrogenic infections. " Flos et Folium Hibisci Mutabilis is the dried flower, leaves or root of Hibiscus Mutabilis L. of the Family Malvaceae. Its leaves contain flavonoid glycosides, amino acid and tannic substances while its flower contains hyperoside, rutin, etc.. Flos et Folium Hibisci Mutabilis has three different colors during a day, yellowish in the morning, pink at noon and deep reddish in the evening. In the morning the flower does not contain anthocyanin, but at noon and in the evening it does. The concentration of anthocyanin in the evening is three times of that at noon.
ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS
Drug sensitivity tests showed that the herb was sensitive to stomach cancer cells.
EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS
For lung cancer:
Folium Hibisci Mutabilis 30g Folium Cordylini Fruticosae 30g Herba Euphorbiae Lunulatae 15g A decoction of the herbs is taken once daily.(Handbook of Practicalcancer Drugs)
=For mammary cancer:
An adhesive plaster made by blending Folium Hibisci Mutabilis powder with 25 % vaseline is applied to the affected surface of the tumor once or twice daily. (Anticancer Herbal Preparations)
For cancer of the digestive system:
Folium Hibisci Mutabilis is dried in the oven and then ground to powder to be applied to the tumor mass; For esophageal cancer, 3 grams of the powder is taken each time, twice a day. (Handbook of Practical Anticancer Drugs)
HISTORICAL COMMENTS
It is stated in Compendium of Materia Medico that: "The leaf clears the lung, cools the blood and serves as an antipyretic and detoxicant. It cures all sizes of carbuncle, cellulitis, pyrogenic infections and malignant boils through relieving swelling, evacuating pus and relieving pains." In Records ofLngnan Herbs it is reported that: "The herb, decocted in good wine, cures acute mastitis completely. "
Described in Medicinal Herbs of Chongqing is that: "The following herbs, when stewed together with pig's heart and lung and a little sugar or salt, cure consumptive diseases and cough:
Folium Hibisci Mutabilis 60-120g Herba Pyrolae 30g Yellow Sugar 30g
It is mentioned in Yujiu 's Annotation on Medicinal Herbs that: "The leaf of the herb clears away pathogenic wind, reduces heat, cools blood and relieves swelling."
