Fructus Polygoni Orientalis(水红花子)

In Materia Medico of Southern Yunnan, it was reported that: "The herb, bitter in taste and cold and neutral in nature, is used to eliminate blood stasis, cure abdominal mass in children and other chronic and uterine mass."

Fructus Polygoni Orientalis is the dried fruit of Polygonum orientate L. of the family Polygonaceae, and is an annual plant growing as high as 3 meters.

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

1. Experiments in vitro revealed that the herb had an inhibitive action on tumor cells. 2. Experiments in vivo showed that administration of the decoction, tincture, or petroleum ether extract of Fructus Polygoni Orientalis to guinea pigs by oral perfusion for 10 days in succession proved that it has certain unsteady inhibition on the solid and ascitic Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma and sarcoma- 180.

EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS

For cancer of the thyroid:

30 grams of fresh Fructus Polygoni Orientalis is decocted and taken daily, while a proper amount of it is pulverized into a paste for external application. (Diagnosis attd Treatment Based on Differentiation of Symptoms and Signs)

For malignant lymphoma:

A certain amount of Fructus Polygoni Orientalis (half baked and half unprocessed) are ground into fine powder and taken with wine, each time 6 grams, three times a day. (Amplified Materia Mexico)

For tumors of the abdominal cavity:

Fructus Polygoni Orientalis 6g Radix et Rhizoma Rhei 3g Natrii Sulfas 3g Fructus Gardeniae 3g Calcaria 3g

The herbs are mixed with wine yeast (about the size of an egg) and smashed to paste to be spread on a piece of cloth for application to the mass. The plaster will be removed after three days and the skin looks deep black because of the application. (Complete Medical Records)

HISTORICAL COMMENTS

In Amplified Materia Medico it was stated that: "The drug cures scrofula. "

It was cited in Chinese Pharmacopeia that: "The drug quenches thirst, relieves fever, improves vision and promotes the flow of qi. "

In Proved Recipes of Li Fu Tang it was commented that: "The drug cures abdominal mass. One bowl of the flower or the fruit of Fructus Polygoni Orientalis is stewed to paste to be applied to the mass or to be mixed with wine for oral administration. Greasy food is forbidden while taking the drug."

THE HERBLAB.ORG'S NOTE

The eighth volume of New Edition of Proved Prescriptions written by Bao Xiang, a noted physician in the Qing Dynasty, cited an eliminating tumor mass plaster, called Xiao Pi Gao, which can be used as a trial therapy for cancer of the liver and the stomach and other abdominal tumors. The formula of the plaster is:

Lithargyrum 180g Resina Ferulae 150g Rhizoma Notopterygii 30g Fructus Polygoni Orientalis 30g Squama Manitis 9g Moschus 3g

The herbs are normally decocted to make paste. 3 grams of Moschus is added at the end of the decoction. The paste is spread on a piece of cloth to be applied on the mass. The plaster should be the same size of the mass, no large and no small. Meanwhile, Fructus Polygoni Orientalis (9g) is pounded to powder, immersed in 1kg of heated wine and drunk frequently till the mass disappears."
