Fructus crataegi(山楂)

It is defined in Daily Materia Medica that: "The drug is sweet-sour in taste and non-toxic in nature, removing hemostasis and the qi stagnation." The drug is the fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida Bge., C. cuneata Sieb, et Zucc. of the Rosaceae family. Citric acid of the latter contains malic acid, crataegolic acid, tannins, saponins and vitamin C. The fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida Bge. contains amygdalin.

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

1. The decoction of sliced Crataegus pinnatifida Bge. can prolong the life of animals with transplanted tumor. 2. The drug resists bacteriophage, this indicating that it inhibits the activity of cancer. 3. The drug evidently inhibits the cells of mice ascites cancer. 4. The decoction of the drug's fruit inhibits JTC-26 with an effective rate of 50-70% in the external experiments.

For osteo cancer:

Fructus Crataegi 30g Radix Astragali 30g Poria 30g Semen Coicis 30g Herba Oldenlandiae Diffusae 30g Radix Angelicae Sinensis 10g Radix Trichosanthis 10g Rhizoma Cibotii 12g Radix Dipsaci 12g Rhizoma Dioscoreae Bulbiferae 12g Fructus Mume 10g Rhizoma Dioscoreae 15g The prescription is taken one dosage a day in decoction. For reinforcement after the operation of stomach cancer:

Fructus Crataegi 12g Poria 12g Massa Medicata Fermentata 12g Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae 12g Radix Astragali 15g Rhizoma Paridis 15g Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae 10g Radix Paeoniae Lacti florae 10g Radix Paeoniae Alba 10g Fructus Hordei Germinatus 10g Fructus Oryzae Germinatus 10g Fructus Aurantii Immaturus 10g Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae 10g Radix Actinidiae Chinensis 60g

For stomach cancer:

Calcined Fructus Crataegi 500g Fructus Mume 500g Roasted Rhizoma Dioscoreae 2000g Poria 250g The herbs are ground into powder, mixed up with honey to make pills of 6g each. Three pills are taken daily after each meal. (Journal of Shaanxi Traditional Chinese Medicine)

For ovarian cancer:

Fructus Crataegi 30g Herba Leonuri 15g Radix Angelicae Sinensis 9g Rhizoma Corydalis 9g Radix Amebiae 9g Rhizoma Chuanxiong 6g The prescription is taken one dosage a day in decoction. (Introduction to Oncology)

For chorioepithelial cancer:

Fructus Crataegi 18g Radix Angelicae Sinensis 9g Herba Lycopi 9g Zujia 9g Poria 12g Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae 15g Nidus Vespae 6g The prescription is taken one dosage a day in decoction and 5 days will make one course of treatment. (Anticancer Preparation in Traditional Chinese Medicine)

HISTORICAL COMMENTS

Materia Medica says that: "The drug promotes digestion, digests accumulated meat and cures phlegm-distention and hemostasis. " Records of Integrated Western and Chinese Medicine says that: "The drug accompanied with drugs of sweet taste removes hemostasis without damaging the new blood, expels the stagnation of qi without damaging the vital energy.
