Fructus et folium solani indici(天茄子)

It is defined in Zhennan Materia Medica that: "The drug is bitter in taste and cold in nature, curing sinusitis."

The drug is obtained from Solanum indicum L. of the Solanaceae family, produced in Yunnan, Guangdong, Sichuan and Taiwan, the fruit of which contains 0.1 % Solanine and the leaf 0.02 %. Solanum nigrum L. of the same family is also of clinical anticancer effective.

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

1. The powder of the leaves causes damage to tumor, enabling the decayed tumor tissue to come off. 2. The drug has a curative effect on some tumors. 3. The extract from Atropa belladome of the same family inhibits experimental tumor; Solanum nigrum L. inhibits stomach cancer cells in animals; Solanum lyratum Thunb. evidently inhibits mice sarcoma-180 and cancer-256.

EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS

For ulcerous breast cancer:

The fresh leaves are dried, ground, sterilized by autoclave and then sprinkled on the ulcerous lesion and covered with sterilized gauze. The treatment is given once or twice a day. Before sprinkling a new powder, the ulcerous lesion must be washed with normal saline. The powder cannot be sprinkled on the fresh muscle or the normal skin membrane lest dermatitis or eczema may occur. (Dictionary of Chinese Materia Medica)

HISTORICAL COMMENTS

Fujian Medical Herbs says that: "Ulcer can be cured with the powder of the leaves of the drug. "

Record of Lingnan Herbal Medicine says that: "To treat retained food or water in the stomach, the drug is washed, dried, calcined yellow, ground into powder, blended with sugar and mixed with 8 to 15 grams of boiling water before oral administration on an empty stomach.

Handbook of Common Chinese Medicinal Herbs reports: "The drug functions to remove stasis and relieve swelling, inflammation and pain, and is indicative for pharyngitis, tonsillitis, lymphatic tuberculosis and gastralgia. To cure gastralgia, 9 to 15 grams of the drug is taken in decoction."
