ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

1. In tests against ascitic sarcoma-I80 with total cellular volumetric method, the substance extracted with methyl alcohol is found to have a strong antineoplastic action when given to an affected guinea-pig under a dosage of lOOmg/per kilogram of body weight through injection once daily for five days. The inhibitory rate was 82%. The ethyl alcohol extract from this herb also has an antineoplastic action with an inhibitory rate of 12.4%.

2. Screening tests with bacteriophages in vitro show an active antineoplastic effect.

3. The drug also promotes the phagocytic function of leukocytes.

EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS

For tumor of the thyroid:

 Herba Solidaginis 15g
 Herba Scutellariae 12g
 Herba Kalimeris 12g
 Herba Lysimachiae 24g

A dose a day for 20 days makes a therapeutic course. Each dose is simmered and then the broth is divided into three portions to be taken in the morning, afternoon and evening. The formula is continued for 1 to 3 more courses after the tumor mass has disappeared. Fujian Journal of Medicinal Herbs reported that the Qiu Lu Clinic in Pu Tian, Fujian Province tried this formula on 53 cases of thyroid tumor and 28 of them were cured after taking the formula for a year, 36 after 2 years and 1 after 10 years.

For cancer of the tongue and the larynx:

Research Data of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Vol. 6, 1978) reported that 15 grams of Herba Solidaginis was boiled in 500ml of water and the broth was administered through gargling daily.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS

Hunan Journal of Medicinal Herbs points out that: "The herb functions to dispel pathogenic wind, remove poisonous substances, control fever, promote blood circulation, subside swelling and relieve pain."

Quangdong Journal of Medicinal Herbs commented that: "The herb is good for removing blood stasis and obstructions and is effective for various traumatic injuries, skin itches and herpes zoster. But, the herb can not be decocted for a long period of time as broth decocted for too long may cause vomiting. "
