Herba cephalanoploris(小蓟)
It is defined in Dictionary of Chinese Materia Medica that: "The drug is sweet in taste, warm and non-toxic in nature, nourishing the essence arid invigorating the blood." The drug is obtained from Cephalanoplos segetum (Bge,) Kitam. of the Compositae family, produced in most regions of China and used clinically with Herba seu Radix Cirsii Japonici. The extract of Cnicus bene dictus of the same family is used externally to treat dermatocancer in some foreign countries.
ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS
The drug inhibits ascites cancer.

For uterine cancer:
Herba Cephalanoploris 18g Herba sou Radix Cirsii Japonici 18g Herba Menthae 9g The prescription is taken in decoction. (Handbook of Medicinal Herbs in Northeast China)
For cystocancer:
Herba Cephalanoploris 30g Herba sou Radix Cirsii Japonici 30g Herba Scutellariae Barbatae 30g Pollen Typhae Carbonisatus 30g Semen Plantaginis Asiaticae 30g Rhizoma Dryopteris Crassirhizomae Carbonisatus 30g Flos Sophorae Immaturus Carbonisatus 30g Herba Oldenlandiae Diffusae 30g Rhizoma Anemarrhenae 12g Poria 12g Polyporus 12g Cortex Phellodendri 12g Radix Rehmanniae 12g
The prescription is taken in decoction one dosage a day. (Practical Oncology)
For various cancer:
15 grams of the whole herb is taken in decoction. (Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Information, Vol. 6, 1978)
For lymphosarcoma:
90 grams of the radix of the drug is decocted with thin pork. Both of the pork and the decoction are taken. The prescription is taken once a day. HISTORICAL COMMENTS
Tang Materia Medica says that: "Both Herba Cepholanoploris and Herba sou Radix Cirsii Japonici can eliminate hemostasis, but the former only focuses on treating blood disorder, while the latter subsides swelling. " Ri Hua Zhi Materia Medica says that: "The drug clears away heat, improves appetite and deficiency." The leaves of Herba sou Radix Cirsii Japonici eliminate abdominal hemostasis." Prescriptions of Universal Relief says that: "Glossorrhagia can be cured by the drug when pounded with wine and taken orally."
