Herba et Radix Gei(水杨梅)
In Dutch Drugs Mirror it was commented that: "Being acrid, warm, fragrant and astringent, the herb smells like Flos Syzyqii Aromatici and is effective for scrofula and other pyrogenic infections."
Herba et Radix Gei is the whole plant or tuberous root of Geum aleppicum Jacq. of the family Rosaceae, which is found growing mainly in Zhejiang, Anhui and Yunnan Province. Adina pilulifera (Lam.) Franch. and Adina rubella (Sieb. et Zucc,) Hance of the family Rubiaceae are also called "Herba et Radix Gei" and has been recognized to have an antineoplastic activity, inhibiting cells of cervical cancer, sarcoma-SAK and Walker's cancer-256 in rats. Herba et Radix Gei, recorded in Compendium of Medicinal Herbs belongs to the family Rosaceae, not to the family Rubiaceae. In clinical reports, the two kinds of herbs are often confused. But as for the anticancer effects, the two are quite similar and can substitute each other.
ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS
1. Experiments in vivo with total cellular volumetric method revealed that the inhibition rate of the hot water extract of Herba et Radix Gei on sarcoma-ISO in rats was 54%. 2. Tests in vitro showed that the water decoction of Herba et Radix Gei had an inhibition rate of over 90% on JTC-26.
EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS
For cancers of the liver and the stomach:
A decoction of Herba et Radix Gei (120g) and Herba Pteridis Multifidae (30g) is taken daily. (Essential Points of Tumors)
For lymphoma:
Pills of Herba et Radix Gei (1.5-3g) prepared with honey are taken all the year; or Herba et Radix Gei (30g) is immersed in white wine (400ml) for some time and a tea spoonful of the wine is takeneach time。3 t0 4 tiffaes a day；or 45 grams of Herba et Radix Gei is decocted in 500ml of water to get 250Inl of‘broth for oral administration with a tea spoonful each time every half an hour．(Dutch Drugs Mirror)
For cancer of the digestive canal：
Radix Gei 30g Herba Solani GIabm 30g Herba Salviae Chinensis 30g Radix Aucldandiae 9g The recipe is taken in decoction daily．(Practical Anticancer Handbook)
HISTORICAL COMMENTS
It was described in Dutch Drugs Mirror that："Herba et Radix Gei，an effective herb for invigorating the mind，contains a sort of oil and bitter salt，which warm up and reinforce the nervee the heart and the stomach and act to some extent as a diaphoretic and diuretic．With its action to relieve sDasm。the herb is used effectively for the treatment of various syndromes due to relaxation and weakness of the fibers．In addition，the drug drives away pathogenic wind，cures pain caused by hernia and always takes effect when used to cure putrefactive fever and intermittent fever．Moreover，it is indicatiVe tor prolonged diarrhea，deficiency syndrome caused by dysentery with bloody stool metrorrhagia , metrostaxis, leukorrhea and vomiting blood．Those with excessive loss of blood are advised to take it。
In Compendium of Medicinal Herbs it was stated that：。The drug is acrid，warm，nonpoisonous and is mainly used for the treatment of furuncle and other types of pyrogemc infections.”
In Dictionary of Chinese Materia Medica it is explained that："The drug restores qi and tonifies the kidney．with indications for dizziness，lassitude of the extremities，spermatorrhea，lmpotence’coId due to exterior deficiency，cough，hematemesis，abdominal pain due to the cold of insufficiency type，rregular menstruation，furuncle and fracture．
In Records ofHerbs in Hunan it was recorded that：。The drug warms the middle-jiao,promotes circulation of qi and alleviates pains．
