LIGNUM ET RADIX ACRONYCHIAE(山油柑)

It is defined in Handbook of Commonly Used Medicinal Herbs that: "The drug is sweet in taste and mild in nature, invigorating qi to activate blood circulation."

The drug is the fruit, leaf, wood or root of a plant of Acronychia pedunculata (L.) Miq. of the Rutaceae family, containing ヲツ-sitosterol in the wood, bauerenol and acronycine in the bark and volatile oil in the leaf, and being mainly produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Taiwan.

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

1. Acronycine is significantly effective in treating reticulocytic leukemia-615. Oral administration of 40mg/kg will ensure mice with over 60 days of survival and with a curative effect of 100%.
2. The drug is effective in treating reticulohistiocytoma.
3. The drug inhibits mice liver cancer with an average effective rate of 52.5%.
4. The drug, administrated orally, inhibits mice cervical cancer-14 with an effective rate of 57.1%.
5. The drug inhibits the activity of animal myeloid leukemia-1499, plasma cell myeloma and adenocancer-755.
6. No change of body weight was seen in the mice in the above experiments, and after oral administration of the drug, no reactions of the digestive tract and no falling of their hair were observed in the animals.
7. Its anticancer mechanism lies in its inhibition of the carcinocytic synthesis of nuclear acid, but the drug shows no influence on normal nuclear acid of the animals.

For fibrosarcoma of bone,fibrosarcoma and liposarcoma:

Acronycine is taken orally 50mg a time and 2 to 3 times a day. 4 weeks make up a course of treatment. This drug is especially effective for Hodgkin's disease, the tumor of which will be reduced one or two weeks after the drug taken. (Chinese Herbal and Medical Correspondence, Vol. 11, 1977)

For various cancer:

15-30g of the bark of the root or tree is decocted or ground for oral administration. (Dictionary of Chinese Materia Medico)

HISTORICAL COMMENTS

Nomenclature of Medicinal Plants in Guangxi says that: "The twig and the leaf of the plant indicate for furuncle, sore and swelling; and the fruit promotes the circulation of qi to expel phlegm." Handbook of Commonly Used Medicinal Herbs says that: "The twig and the leaf cure cough and trauma; the fruit cures dyspepsia; the internal wood or the root promotes the circulation of qi to invigorate the blood, activates the spleen and stops cough. The drug also cures lumbago, pain of the leg due to wind-wetness, pain due to trauma and gastralgia due to the stagnation of qi,"

THE AUTHOR'S NOTE

Science of Medicinal Herbs (Vol. 8, 1966) reported that Acronycine extracted from a plant of the same family resists tumor and out of 17 oncological experiments, it showed significant curative effect in 12 experiments with cancers such as myelocytic leukemia C-1498, which are not sensitive to chemotherapy. A traditional herb with the same name in Chinese is not the drug, but Dalbergia Sisso Roxb.
