Radix Zanthoxyli(入地金牛)

Canon of Materia Medico says that: "The herb is bitter in taste and warm in nature. It is effective for arthralgia due to wind-cold dampness, severe and migratory arthralgia and cold limbs'.

It is the root or leaves of shiny prickly ash, Zanthoxylum nitidum (Rufaceae), which grows in the bushes on hills and mountain slopes in Quangdong, Quangxi, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. The root contains nitidine, oxynitidine and diosmin, while the leaves and the nuts mainly contain volatile ail.

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

Radix Zanthoxyli 30g Rhizoma Imperatae 30g Periostracum Serpentis 30g Radix Cynanchi Paniculati 15g Rhizoma Dioscoreae 15g Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong 15g Radix Rehmanniae 24g Herba Rubi Parvifolii 60g

The herbs are taken in decoction and a dose daily.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS

Origin of Materia Medico says that: "When decocted after being removed off the outer layer, the herb is effective for subcutaneous nodule and acute laryngeal infection".

Handbook of Common Chinese Medicinal Herbs says that: "The extracted fluid of the herb with alcohol at a ratio of 1 to 1 inhibits hemolytic streptococcus and staphylococcus aureus more powerfully, while the water solution seems less powerful. The herb is poisonous and it may cause abdominalgia and diarrhea. It is contraindicates sour food. "
