Radix asparagi(天门冬)
Zhang Yuansu in the Yuan Dynasty said that: "The drug is bitter and sweet in taste, eliminating hemostasis and nourishing kidney. "
The drug is the root of a plant of the Asparagus genus and the Liliaceae family, produced in the south and the central regions of China. Asparagus spinosissimus Wang et S.C. Chen produced in Tibet is used as a substitute of the drug.

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS
1. The drug inhibits mice sarcoma-180 and leukemic cells. 2. The drug can prolong the surviving period of the antibody and reinforce the immunity of the body fluid. 3. Experiments in vivo showed that A. meioclados Levl. resists the activity of cancer. 4. The ethanol extract inhibits human tumor, causing changes in 51-100% of the cancer cells.
EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS
For mammary cancer: 1 >. The peeled fresh drug is boiled with millet wine for 30 minutes and then the millet wine is taken orally. 2 >. The fresh drug is peeled and eaten in raw with millet wine. 3 >. The fresh drug is squeezed to get juice to be mixed with 0.1 % benzoic acid and taken 3 times a day (50 grams each) with millet wine. The dosage can be gradually increased to 150 grams a time if the effect is not significant. (New Medical information. Vol. 4-5, 1972)
For Leukemia and breast cancer:
The drug is diacolated with 70% ethanol and the liquid is condensed into 1:4 before being mixed with some 95% ethanol to make a liquid with 70-80% ethanol. After the clear liquid is collected and the ethanol is removed, normal saline is added to dilute the liquid to such a solution with each milliliter containing 5 grams of the crude drug. The preparation is administered either intravenously or intramuscularly 2-4ml a day.
For malignant lymphoma:

Approach to Medicine says that: "Swelling and carbuncles can be cured with 30-150g of the fresh drug when washed, ground, filtrated with wine and taken orally." Prescriptions for Surgery says that: "Chronic stomatitis can be cured with an equal portion of Radix Asparagi, Radix Ophiopogonis and Radix Scrophulariae made into honey-coated pills and sucked with one pill a time."
Materia Medica of Pharmaceutical Properties says that: "The drug eliminates foul odor emitted from the body."
Pharmaceutical Properties says that: "The drug cures pyogenic lung cancer."
Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold says that: "The drug cures abdominal mass, pyogenic sore and carbuncles. "
Newly Edited Materia Medica says that: "The drug is cold and slippery in nature, forbidden to be used for patients with splenogastropenia and diarrhea with undigested food. "
THE HERBLAB.ORG'S NOTE
In Dongshan People's Hospital, Wu county, Jiangsu Province, 41 cases of malignant lymphatic cancer were treated with the drug and Herba Oldenlandiae Diffusae as the main ingredients, and 36.9% of the patients were clinically cured, 22.% proved significantly effective and 29.3% effective, with a total effective rate of 87.9%. 23 cases were treated with the drug and Herba Oldenlandiae alone, and the total effective rate was 87.9%, according to a report in New Medicine (Vol. 4, 1975).
Compared with other anticancer drugs, these two drugs were quick in action, significant in efficacy, safe in use and effective for patients with resistance to other drugs. Therefore, these two drugs can be used alone or with other drugs to treat malignant lymphoma.
119 cases of various tumors were treated with the drug combined with Western medicine in Suzhou Hygiene Bureau, among which 48 were cured, 25 were proved significantly effective, 27 effective and the total effective rate was 84%. This indicates that the drug is effective in treating breast cancer, lymphoma and metastasized cancer according to a report in Correspondence of Chinese Herbal Medicine (Vol. 4, 1972).
