Radix codonopsis lanceolatae(山角螺)
It is defined in Newly Compiled Materia Medica in Zhenan that: "The drug is sweet in taste and mild in nature, clearing away heat in the lung, nourishing yin and removing toxic materials through expelling pus. " The drug is the root of Codonopsis lanceolata Benth. et Hook. of the Campanulaceae family, containing saponins, saccharides, protein and vitamin B, and is produced in most regions of China.
ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS
The drug inhibits the activity of transplanted sarcoma-180 of mice.

For lung cancer:
Radix Codonopsis Lanceolatae 30g Herba Houttuyniae 30g Herba Oldenlandiae Diffusae 30g Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae 12g Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae 12g Nidus Vespae 12g Poria 15g Polyporus 15g Semen Coicis 15g The prescription is taken one dosage a day in decoction. For thyroid cancer:
Radix Codonopsis Lanceolatae 30g Spica Prunellae 9g Sargassum 9g Thallus Laminariae sou Eckloniae 9g Spina Gleditsiae 9g Squama Manitis 9g Cortex Moutan 6g Cormus lphigeniae 6g Semen Sinapis 2.4g The prescription is taken in decoction. HISTORICAL COMMENTS
Records of Famous Doctors says that: "The drug cures dizziness, promotes qi and muscles." Supplementation to Materia Medica says that: "The drug cures scrofula when the juice is
administered with wine and the residue applied to the lesion. "
Newly Compiled Materia Medica in Zhenan says that: "The drug is inferior to Radix Codonopsis pilosulae in reinforcing qi, but is superior in promoting moisture; inferior to Radix Adenophorae in nourishing the stomach to invigorate yin, but superior in promoting yin and lactation and removing toxic materials."
THE AUTHOR'S NOTE
Experiments on the comparison between the drug and Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae showed that both of them are capable of increasing erythrocytes and hemochrome, decreasing leukocytes and reinforcing the activity of the animals. But mice swimming experiment showed that the drug was superior to Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae. In treating patients with tumor characterized by deficiency of qi and blood, the author often uses large doses of the drug and Fructus Ziziphi Jupjubae and the effect is excellent.
