RADIX ET FOLIUM DOLICHI(大麻药)
It is defined in Medicinal Herbs in Yunnan that: "The drug is hot in taste, warm and toxic in nature, stopping hemorrhage to invigorate muscles, and subsiding inflammation to ease pain."
The drug is the leave or the root of Dolichos falcatus klein of the Leguminosae family, and its root contains triterpenoidal saponins and alkaloids. The drug is produced in Yunnan and Guangdong provinces.
ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS
1. The extract of the root of the drug evidently inhibits cellular respiration of the tissue of many transplanted tumors in mice. 2. The drug selectively damages cancer cells, with its effective element being saponins glucoside.
EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS
For cervical cancer:
When pounded and applied to the lesion, the root of the drug is effective in reducing the size of the tumor, subsiding inflammation and stopping hemorrhage. (Traditional Chinese Medicine Pharmacological Correspondence, Vol. 2, 1977)
For bloody defecation caused by rectocancer:
3 to 9 grams of the calcined drug is decocted and taken three times a day orally. (Medicinal Herbs in the Wen Mountains)
HISTORICAL COMMENTS
Dictionary of Chinese Materia Medica says that: "The drug eases pain, subsides inflammation, stops hemorrhage, cures pain caused by wind-wetness, trauma, fracture, bleeding caused by exogenous factors, rhinorrhagia, blood-vomiting and bloody defecation, when 3 to 9 grams of the drug (15-30g when fresh) is decocted or steeped in wine for oral taking, or ground into powder for application to the lesion."
Medicinal Herbs in the Wen Mountains says that: "The drug promotes blood circulation to eliminate stasis and stops pain by subsiding inflammation and hemorrhage caused by trauma, when the pounded fresh leaves or the powder is applied to the lesion."
Selected Medicinal Herbs in Yunnan says that: "Pain due to wind-wetness and trauma can be treated with 6 grams of the drug steeped in wine for taking several times or 15-30g of the drug decocted and taken twice a day."
