Radix et herba semiaquilegiae(天葵)

It was claimed in Materia Medica of Southern Yunnan that: "The herb is cold in nature and bitter, acrid in taste, and cures breast cancer as hard as rock."

Radix et Herba Semiaquilegiae is the dried tuberous root or the whole plant of Semiaquilegiae, Semiaquilegiae adoxoides (DC,) Mak. of the family Ranunculaceae, which is primarily distributed in Jiangsu and Zhejiang Province and contains mainly alkaloids.

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

The herb was found to have an inhibitive action on sarcoma-180 of rats.

EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS

For cancers of the nasopharynx and esophagus:

Radix et Herba Semiaquilegiae (0.5kg) is pulverized and immersed in 5kg of sorghum or cereal wine for 7 days. Then, the wine is taken three times a day with a dose of 50ml each time. Salmiacum preparations can also be given at the same time. (Selected Data from a National Exhibition on New Medical and Medicinal Techniques)

For cancer of the urinary bladder:

Radix et Herba Seirnaquilegiae 15g Folium Pyrrosiae 15g Herba Lysimachiae 30g Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae 30g A decoction of the herbs is taken once daily.

For cancer of the lung:

Radix et Herba Semiaquilegiae 15g Herba Bulbophylli 15g Rhizoma Fagopyri Cymosi 30g Herba Lepidogrammitis 30g A decoction of the herbs is taken once daily. (Practical Anticancer Handbook)

For cancer of the breast:

Radix et Herba Semiaquilegiae 4.5g Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae 9g Concha Ostreae 12g Radix Glycyrrhizae 3g The decoction of the herbs is taken once daily, (Folk Medicinal Herbs of Zhejiang Province)

For malignant lymphoma:

Radix et Herba Semiaquilegiae 15g Rhizoma Dioscoreae Bulbiferae 15g Radix Kadsurae 15g Rhizoma Paridis 15g Rhizoma Arisaematis (First boiled for 2 hours) 30g

The decoction of the herbs is taken once daily. (Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention of Tumors)

HISTORICAL COMMENTS

Compendium of Medicinal Herbs points out that: "The herb can help discharge urinary stone. To treat tiger and snake bite, squeeze out the juice of the herb and drink it; When applied to the surface of the wound, the drug may serve as a detoxicant and analgesic." In Origin of Materia Medica it was commented that: "The herb is mainly used to cure internal injuries due to phlegm fire. In addition, it cures scrofula and malignant boils, and becomes more powerful particularly after being immersed in wine."

THE HERBLAB.ORG'S NOTE

Recorded in Mirror of Ancient and Modern Medicine was Tiankui Wan (Radix et Herba Semiaquilegiae Pill), which is mainly indicated for scrofula and is used by doctors who try to treat thyroid cancer and lymphoma. The Pill consists the following herbs:

Radix et Herba Semiaquilegiae 45g Sargassum 30g Thallus Eckloniae 30g Thallus Laminariae 30g Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae 30g Radix Platycodi 30g 0s Sepiae 15g

All the above herbs are put together and ground into Fine powder to be blended with wine to make pills of the size of Semen Firmianae. 70 pills are taken each time with warm wine after meal.
