Radix sophorae subprostratae(山豆根)

Wang Ang in the Qing Dynasty said that: "The drug is bitter in taste and cold in nature, clearing away heat accumulated in the heart to protect the lung energy."

The drug is the dried root or rhizoma of Sophora subprostrata of the Leguminosae family, and mainly produced in Guangxi, Jiangxi and Guizhou. Menispermum dauricum DC, of the Menispermaceae family shares the same name with the drug in Chinese, but it does not resist cancer.

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

1. Animal experiment shows that the effect exerted by the drug on cancer is similar to that of immunity.
2. The hot water extract of the drug evidently inhibits cervical cancer.
3. Matrine and oxymatrine in the drug can prolong the life of mice with sarcoma-180, and trifolirhizin also bears this function.
4. Experiments with the drug on mice suffering from sarcoma and ascites hepatoma-180 showed that it cures the disease with an effective rate of 60%, and is effective in prolonging the survival of the dying rats and in resisting tumor. Oncological antigen has been found in the serum of the cured rats, and it is inheritable.
5. Methylene blue tube test with 2 grams of the crude drug per milliliter showed that the drug inhibits the cells of leukemia.
6. It is reported that the drug can stimulate the reticuloendothelial system.
7. The drug evidently inhibits transplanted cervical cancer-14, when the extract of the drug is administrate to mice orally with a dose of 60g/kg a day, for totally 16 to 21 days.
8. The efficiency of oxymatrine in chemotherapy is 7 or 8 times higher than that of Mitomycin C.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS

It is reported in Materia Medica that: "The drug removes toxic materials in many drugs, stops pain, subsides inflammation and stops cough, cures pharyngitis when sucked, eliminates abdominal distension when ground and taken orally, relieves female abdominal distention due to the stagnation of blood when taken with wine, and treats baldness, snake bite, dog bite or spider bite when squeezed to get a juice for application to the lesion. For esophageal cancer and pharyngeal cancer, the drug is ground with vinegar for sucking."

It is said in Elucidation on Materia Medica that: "The drug is sweet-bitter in taste, cold and non-toxic in nature. It neutralizes toxicity with its sweet taste and eliminates heat with its cold nature. Toxic drugs are usually hot and sweet, and is removed spontaneously when combined with drugs that are cold, sweet and bitter." "The drug also cures breast cancer."

THE AUTHOR'S NOTE

It was defined in ancient times that: "The vines of the herb are evergreen and similar to those of a bean." It is certain that the herb belongs to the bean family, not the Menispermaceae family. The herb is a broad-spectrum anticancer drug, resisting different kinds of tumors. However it cannot be administered for a long time because of its bitter taste and cold nature. It was reported by the Ci County Anticancer Bureau, Hebei Province, that the effect of the drug on cancer tissues is different from that of the cellular toxicity and the anti-metabolism of the chemotherapeutic agents.

The drug works through stimulating the anticancer immune mechanism of the patient and reinforcing his resistance against the growth of tumor. A patient suffering from severe headache caused by angioma in the left eye was treated with the drug together with Radix Amebiae, Radix Glycyrrhizae and Radix Semiaquilegiae. After taking 20 doses, the patient was relieved from headache and the eyesight was greatly improved.

It was reported in Medical Abstract (Vol. 4, 1960) that the drug produced in Japan was evidently effective in treating malignant tumor with no side-effect and danger to reduce the leukocytes. Animal experiments showed that the drug is safe for clinical use. A renowned Japanese doctor often prescribed the drug to treat cancer and has achieved certain curative effect. 17 cases of leukemia were treated with the drug in a hospital affiliated to Jiangxi Medical College and it was found significantly effective in 3 cases, and effective in 8 cases with different improvement of their condition. 30 cases of cervical cancer and laryngeal cancer were treated with the drug and the effect was evident. (Hunan Medical Journal, Vol. 5, 1977). In Medical Essays compiled by Wu Shangda in the Qing Dynasty, is recorded a prescription containing the drug for anal cancer:

Fructus Arctii Radix Scutellariae Cormus lphigeniae Scorpio Flos Carthami Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae Rhizoma Pinelliae Semen Pruni Armeniacae Radix Trichosanthis Radix Kansui Radix Euphorbiae Pekinensis Periostracum Cicadae Periostracum Serpentis Radix et rhizoma rhei Radix Sophorae Flavescentis

All the above herbs are effective against cancer and the prescription should be popularized and inherited. categoryESOPHAGEAL CANCER
