Radix trichosanthis(天花粉)

Huang Gongxiu in the Qing Dynasty said that: "The drug is sour, slightly bitter and sweet in taste, slightly cold in nature, eliminating heat-phlegm accumulated above the diaphragm."

The drug is obtained from Trichosanthis Ririlow'n Maxim, of the Trichosanthes genus and the Cucurbitaceae family.

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

1. The extract from the drug cures chorioepithelioma with a rate of 50% and malignant hydatidiform mole with a rate of 100%. It increases leukocytes, but has no side effect on the liver andthe kidney. 2. The drug inhibits cervical cancer-14, sarcoma-180 and ascites cancer. 3. The drug inhibits JTC-26 with a 90% effective rate. 4. Its anticancer mechanism lies in: 1). Causing necrosis to trophocytes; And 2). Interfering the respiration and anaerobic glycolysis of the cancer cells. The effective element is glucoprotein.

EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS

For malignant hydatidiform mole and chorioepithelioma:

The fresh drug is washed, sterilized with alcohol, squeezed into juice and put into refrigerator for deposition. The clear liquid is collected and' frozen. The whole Fructus Gleditsiae Abnormalis is washed, sterilized with alcohol, calcined, ground into powder, filtrated with distilled water and frozen. The two frozen drugs are blended with a 9 to 1 ratio and filled into 0.275g-0.5g capsules for inserting into the vaginal fomix 5-7 days a time. Before the administration, the patient should urinate, defecate, wash the vagina with warm boiled water. The patient should lie on bed to rest after a capsule inserted. For malignant hydatidiform mole:

When injected intramuscularly, the drug necroses the mole tissue, prevents and the womb from enlarging and evidently reduces the size of the enlarged womb. In some cases, the mole would come out spontaneously 3-6 days after the administration. (Medical Research Correspondence, Vol. 7, 1978)

HISTORICAL COMMENTS

Ri Hua Zhi Materia Medica says that: "The drug smoothens small intestine, subsides swelling, cures breast abscess and expels pus to promote muscle development. "

Classification and Prescriptions says that: "Breast abscess can be cured with 30 grams of the drug and 3 grams of Olibanum when ground into powder and taken 6 grams a time with wine. "

Dietetic Prescriptions of Mengxi says that: "Primary carbuncles or swelling can be cured by the drug when decocted in millet wine, dried and ground. The powder is blended with millet wine, spread on paper and applied to the lesion." "Equal portion of the drug and Semen Phaseol Calcarati is ground, blended with vinegar and applied to the lesion."
