Rhizoma Acori Graminei(石菑蒲)
It was recorded in Shen Nong's Medicinal Herbs that:"The herb,acrid and warm,is used to supplement the five viscera and clear the nice orifices."
Rhizoma Acori Graminei is the dried rhizome of Acorus gramineus Soland of the family Araceae,which contains volatile oil, amino acids and organic acids in its rhizome and leaf."

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS
The inhibitive rate of the herb has been found to be 92% on Aspergillus flavus,97% on aspergillus,100% on both aflatoxin B1 and sporotrichosis. 2.Screening tests in vitro have preliminarily proved that the decoction of the herb kills cells of ascites carcinoma. 3.In addition,in vivo animal experiments verifien that the herb has an active effect against cancer.
EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS
For cervical cancer:
Equal portions of Rhizoma Acori Graminei and Fructus Psoraleae are parched into powder to be orally taken with a dose of 6 grams.At the same time, Rhizoma Acori Graminei is immersed in wine and taken daily.(Effective Prescriptions for Women)
For various types of cancer:
Rhizoma Acori Graminei (10g) is decocted in 200ml of water to be taken in three doses.(Research Data of Medicinal Herbs,Vol.6,1978)
HISTORICAL COMMENTS
It was described in Compendium of Medicinal Herbs that:"Rhizoma Acori Graminei is warm in nature and indicative for insufficiency of the heart-qi.It also supplements the liver for related disorders with its acrid taste." In Materia Medica of Southern Yuman reported that:"The herb cures nine kinds of the stomach diseases due to the disorder of its qi and relieves pain." In Essentials of Materia Medica it was stated that:"The drug supplements the liver,nourishes the heart,promotes functional activity of the stomach and relieves epigastric distention."
THE AUTHOR'S NOTE
It has been confirmed in pharmacological experiments that volatile oil of the herb has a remarkable sedative effect,which indicates its proper application in treating cancer patients complicated with restlessness and unconsciousness.Besides, the volatile oil of the herb is actively antipyretic.To secure its curative efficacy,Rhizoma Acori Graminei is added later than other herbs for boiling and should not be decocted for a long time.
