RHIZOMA SMILACIS GLABRAE

Compendium of Materia Medica says: "The herb, slightly sweet in taste, flat in nature and nonpoisonous, is good for promoting the function of the spleen and the stomach and strengthening the bones and the muscles. "

It is the dried root of Smilax glabra (Liliaceae). Li Shizhen wrote: "There are two types of smilax glabra, the white one is better than the red one when used as a herb."

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

1. Tests in vitro with JTC-26 showed that the hot water extract of the herb can completely inhibit JTC-26 with a concentration of 500μg/ml, while bleomycinum (5μg/ml) has an inhibitory rate of 66%.

2. The herb also showed a certain inhibition on sarcoma cells.

EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS

For meningoma:

Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae 75g Radix Polygoni Multiflori 25g Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis 25g Semen Cassiae 20g FlosChrysanthemil5g Semen Persicae 15g Rhizoma chuangxiong 10g Radix Angelicae sinensis 50g The herbs are taken in water decoction with a dose a day. (Liaoning Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine)

For malignant lymphoma:

Ji Detang's Proved Recipes recommended decoction of the herb or porridge cooked with the slices or the powder of the herb. It also said that the herb contraindicates iron and fermentative food.

For thyroid cancer:

Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae 15g Radix Fagopyri 9g Rhizoma Dioscoreae Bulbiferae 9g Herba Solani Lyrati 15g Radix Cayratiae 12g Herba Taraxaci 12g Radix Glycyrrhizae 6g Flos Lonicerae 6g The herbs are taken in water decoction, reported by Zhejiang Journal of Folk Medicine,

For papilloma of the bladder:

New Medical Bulletin reported in its third volume, 1978 that 60 grams of Fresh Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae and 30 grams of Fructus Trachycarpi are decocted into a paste and are finally made into tablets, each 0.3 gram. The tablets are taken three times a day, each time 5 tablets.

For craniopharyngioma:

HISTORICAL COMMENTS

Comprehension of Materia Medica commended: "Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae, which enters the collaterals to remove pathogenic dampness and heat, is used to relieve poisoning caused by hydrargyrum and calomelas through promotion of excretion. Hence, it is commonly used to treat syphilitic skin lesions, joint pain and sore throat and all malignant diseases. Essential Properties of Medicinal Herbs said: "When applied, the decoction of Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae is very effective for malignant carbuncles. "

Essentials of Materia Medica recorded: "In its thin form, Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae can get deep into the tissue, while in its thick form, it nourish the body. Taken in decoction as a tea, it is particularly effective for carbuncles."

THE AUTHOR'S NOTE

It was reported that the First Teaching Hospital of Beijing Medical University cured a patient with cancer of the urine bladder with the following formula and a special tea made out of Bufo and Herba Oldenlandiae Diffusae:
