RHIZOMA BOLBOSTEMMAE(土贝母)

New Materia Medica says that: "The herb has a bitter taste and cures external pathologic phlegm."

It is the dried rhizoma of Bolbostemma paniculatum (Maxim.) Franquet (Orchidacea), which grows in Hunan and Shaanxi Province. Its rhizoma mainly contains mannose and sucrose.

ANTICANCER PHARMACOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS

1. Through scanning tests in vitro, it is found that the herb inhibits the activity of tumor. 2. The injection prepared with the herb can reduce morbidity of cervical cancer induced by methylcholanthrene.

EXPERIMENTAL FORMULAS

For breast cancer:

Bulbus Bolbostemmae 15g
Herba Taraxaci 15g
Squama Manitis 15g
Semen Aurantii 15g
Flos Lonicerae 15g
Spica Prunellae 15g

The formula is taken a dose a day in water decoction, half of the broth in the morning and another half in the evening. The formula is very effective for febrile pain due to reddish swelling. (Anticancer Medicinal Herbs)

Yao Xizhou's Proved Recipes for Breast Cancer recommended the decoction of the following  herbs either in water or in wine:
Bulbus Bolbostemmae 9g
Fructus Forsythiae 9g
Flos Lonicerae 9g
HISTORICAL COMMENTS

Mirror of a Hundred Herbs recorded: "The herb is good for scattering carbuncles, removing pus, dispelling wind and damp pathogenic factors and resolving phlegm."

Supplement to Materia Medica said: "15 grams of Bulbus Bolbostemmae, when added to Yanghe Tang Formula, is very effective for breast cancer. At the early stage of acute mastitis, the mixture of an equal portion of the powder of Bulbus Bolbostemmae and Radix Angelicae Dahuricae is very effective when taken with a dose of 9 grams. If the patient is strong, the dosage can be increased to 15 grams. Usually after the first dosage, the illness may disappear. If not, a second dose is given."

Hatulbook of Holly Medicine reported: "The following formula, when decocted either in water or in wine, onion and ginger, is effective for pyogenic infection of the back of the hand:

Radix Glycyrrhizae 15g
Radix Glycyrrhizae (baked) 15g
Spina Gleditsiae 7.5g
Bulbus Bolbostemmae (baked with earth) 16.5g
Rhizoma Pinelliae 4.5g
Squama Manitis 7.5g
Rhizoma Anemarrhenae 7.5g "
